Motor Fraud Specialist Joins BLM

Leading insurance and dispute resolution law firm, Berrymans Lace Mawer LLP (BLM) has appointed new partner Daniel Thomas to the national fraud team. He joins the firm’s Birmingham office on 4 March 2013 from Browne Jacobson.

Daniel will use his experience in developing counter-fraud products and setting counter-fraud strategies to boost the firm’s national offering. He joins BLM’s fraud team of 60 lawyers, advising clients on a multitude of cases, ranging from policyholder fraud, bogus claims, exaggerated injury, staged accidents and large scale fraud rings.

The firm is currently working on 950 cases across 123 fraud operations, in addition to a significant number of standalone fraud matters which encompass motor, commercial and household fraud, animal fraud and fraudulent employers’ liability and public liability matters.

Sarah Hill, joint head of the BLM fraud team, said: “Daniel has worked in the fraud arena for a number of years, establishing a solid portfolio of successfully defended fraudulent claims. His ability to handle a full range of issues including complex indemnity issues, policy interpretation and fraudulent exaggeration, amongst others, makes him a valuable addition the team.”

BLM has been at the forefront of the fraud arena, advising leading insurance companies and their insured on defending high profile claims. BLM recently acted in the landmark Supreme Court case of Fairclough Homes v Summers, the outcome of which has set a precedent for the future handling of litigation in substantially fraudulent claims and is already being positively applied by lower courts.

Commenting on his appointment, Daniel said: “BLM’s fraud profile and its reputation in the insurance industry made it a natural choice. The team has a pre-eminent position in the market when it comes to fighting fraud and I am looking forward to being a part of that.”
