Squire Sanders is pleased to announce that Barbara P. Alonso has joined the firm’s Financial Services Practice Group as a partner in its Miami office. She joins from Greenberg Traurig where she was a partner.
Jim Barresi, Global Head of Squire Sanders’ Financial Services Practice Group, commented, “We’re delighted to have Barbara join the firm and see her arrival as an exciting addition to our cross-border transactional capabilities. Her broad experience, knowledge across markets and perspective as in-house counsel at leading global companies adds to our ability to serve clients around the world, especially those with interests throughout Latin America.”
Ms. Alonso focuses her practice on international and domestic corporate matters, including corporate and project finance, debt and equity capital markets, and bank and broker-dealer regulatory issues. She has represented financial institutions and other capital sources in a wide variety of domestic and cross-border lending transactions, including matters involving corporate and sovereign borrowers throughout the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and Africa.
In the capital markets sector, Ms. Alonso has represented issuers (domestic, foreign and sovereign) and underwriters in both public offerings and private placements of debt and equity securities. Most notably, she has acted for issuers and underwriters in respect of transactions related to Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.
Commenting on her decision to join Squire Sanders Ms. Alonso said, “Few firms offer the global footprint and practice breadth of Squire Sanders. The firm’s established reputation handling matters across Latin America, coupled with a presence in Madrid and other cities across Europe, the Middle East and Asia make it an ideal platform upon which to expand my practice.”
Ms. Alonso previously held the position of assistant general counsel for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York, where she supported Chase’s Latin America capital markets business. She also served as in-house counsel for Nortel Networks (Caribbean and Latin America region), where she handled various telecommunications transactions. She is currently on the Board of Directors of the Hispanic National Bar Foundation.
Ms. Alonso is the latest addition to Squire Sanders’ global Financial Services Practice. In December, the firm welcomed two highly-respected partners to its London office: Philippa Chadwick, a project finance attorney with extensive experience in energy, transportation and water projects around the world, and Paula Laird, one of Europe’s leading asset based lending and asset finance lawyers.
“Squire Sanders’ Miami office serves as a gateway connecting Florida with the business and economic centers of South and Central America,” said Luis Reiter, managing partner of Squire Sanders’ Miami office. “Barbara’s addition builds upon the growing cross border transactional capabilities for the office and the region.”
