Margaret Hopson Joins Strasburger’s International Practice

Strasburger & Price, LLP (Strasburger) is pleased to welcome Margaret Jones Hopson to its San Antonio office.

Ms. Hopson’s practice focuses on international business and trade compliance, providing counsel on customs and trade laws (both import and export), NAFTA, U.S. anti-boycott regulations, and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. She assists clients with commodity classification and export licensing issues, C-TPAT enrollment and verification, defending penalty, liquidated damages and seizure actions. As part of her services to clients, Ms. Hopson also designs and implements import and export compliance programs and provides training on all aspects of international trade compliance.

Ms. Hopson regularly advises Mexican companies doing business in the United States, as well as U.S. entities conducting business in Mexico. Her import clients include U.S. companies and individuals as well as those located abroad. She assists exporters of dual-use items, subject to the Department of Commerce’s Export Administration Regulations, as well as manufacturers and exporters of military items, which are subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations under the Department of State. She has extensive experience in compliance with the Deemed Export Rule, by which a release of technology to a foreign national is deemed to be an export to the foreign national’s home country.

“Margaret has been a well-respected figure in the San Antonio legal community for some time,” said Edward Valdespino, Partner-In-Charge of Strasburger’s San Antonio offices. “Her extensive experience in international trade compliance will be a tremendous complement to the firm’s robust international practice.”

Before embarking on her legal career, Ms. Hopson led a multi-million dollar independent retail department store on the Texas/Mexico border as President and CEO. She is an honors graduate of The University of Texas at Austin and earned her law degree, with honors, from St. Mary’s University School of Law. Born and raised in Laredo, Ms. Hopson is fluent in Spanish.
