London Financial Regulatory Litigator Charles Roberts Joins Milbank

In an expansion of its litigation practice, law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP has announced the addition of one of the country’s leading financial services regulatory litigators, Charles Roberts, as a partner in the firm’s Litigation & Arbitration Group, based in London.

Charles, who joins from Norton Rose, handles a broad range of domestic and international banking and commercial disputes, and has developed a specialisation, and market-leading reputation and practice, in contentious regulatory proceedings, representing corporate, financial institutions and individuals under investigation and in enforcement proceedings brought by a variety of regulatory bodies such as the Financial Services Authority (FSA), the Serious Fraud Office (SFO), Lloyd’s of London and various stock exchanges. He has been involved in a number of the most high-profile market abuse cases which have been brought by the FSA. Charles is highly rated by the leading legal directories and is top-rated for contentious financial services work by Chambers.

Alan Stone, the practice group leader of Milbank’s Litigation & Arbitration group, commented, “We are very pleased to add such a prominent and experienced financial services regulatory litigation partner to our practice to complement our already existing strong capabilities in London and across the firm.”

Charles Roberts noted, “I am delighted to be joining Milbank, and such a thriving litigation practice and very much look forward to working within the practice in London and more globally.”

Charles is the fifth new partner to join Milbank’s London office in the past eight months. In May, the firm announced the arrival of corporate lawyer Mark Stamp from Linklaters, in June, Nicholas Spearing joined from Freshfields as the office’s first competition/anti-trust partner, in August, Neil Caddy joined from Mayer Brown to expand the firm’s leveraged finance practice and Clive Ransome joined the Project Finance practice from Linklaters.

Russell Jacobs, London managing partner commented on the hire, “We are pleased to be growing our practice in London in line with both the strategy of the firm and the needs of our clients. This latest hire shows not only our continued success within our Litigation group, which continues to thrive in London and internationally, but also our firm’s commitment to careful growth in the key practice areas in which we see the strengths of the firm.”
