Gowlings Expands Restructuring & Insolvency Practice to the U.K. and Europe

Gowlings, one of Canada’s largest law firms, is expanding its Restructuring & Insolvency practice to the U.K. and Europe with the addition of a team of two highly regarded practitioners to its London office: David Wright and Andrew Mace.

Both David and Andrew have extensive expertise in restructuring and insolvency matters. They also bring significant multi-jurisdictional capabilities, having acted for clients in the U.K., Europe and the U.S.

“We are excited to have David and Andrew join Gowlings’ international team,” said Scott Jolliffe, Gowlings chair and CEO. “It’s been a tremendous year of growth and momentum for the firm’s Restructuring & Insolvency Group and for our London office. Our restructuring & insolvency practice has established itself as one of Canada’s best, and with David and Andrew in London, we look forward to extending that reputation into the U.K., Europe and beyond.”

David and Andrew are the latest in a series of high-profile additions to the Gowlings Restructuring & Insolvency practice and to the firm’s London office. In January, one of Canada’s most respected restructuring & insolvency lawyers, Derrick Tay, moved to Gowlings, along with Jennifer Stam, a leading restructuring and insolvency lawyer in her own right.

In March, six top international mining lawyers joined the London office. Gowlings has since been ranked by Morningstar as one of the leading U.K. advisers to AIM-listed companies in the basic materials sector (based on total number of clients) and is listed among the top-20 advisers to AIM-listed companies overall.

“Both Andrew and I feel that the international R&I platform this move has afforded is second to none,” said David. “We are delighted to be part of the growth story at Gowlings.”

David Wright was previously the head of Insolvency and Restructuring at a large U.K. firm and brings nearly two decades of experience as an insolvency lawyer. A recognized leader in both contentious and non-contentious restructuring and insolvency matters, he has acted for a number of large banks, U.S. law firms, U.S. and European corporations, insolvency practitioners, and institutional investors. His experience includes acting as U.K. agent for the U.S. government on the Madoff Ponzi scheme; handling the purchase of a number of the Ramada brand hotels; and acting for creditors of MF Global UK.

Andrew Mace brings 15 years of corporate insolvency, restructuring and distressed M&A experience. He has led all types of insolvency instruction, including liquidations, administrative receiverships and schemes of arrangement. Andrew acts for a number of high-profile investors, banks and insolvency practitioners. His experience includes working for Enron counterparties on set-off, valuation and close-out issues, and representing the liquidators of Daewoo cars.
