Rising Litigation Star Davit Akman Moves to Gowlings

Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP (Gowlings) is pleased to announce that  Davit Akman, a rising litigation star, has joined the firm’s Commercial Litigation and Competition Law/Antitrust groups.

As a partner in Gowlings’ Toronto office, Davit brings with him extensive commercial law experience with recognized expertise in competition and class action litigation.

Davit has built a strong reputation in the commercial litigation, competition law and class action bars. In 2010, Davit was named one of Lexpert’s “Rising Stars” as a leading lawyer under 40, and in 2011, he was again singled out as a “Litigation Lawyer to Watch” in theLexpert Guide to the Leading US/Canada Cross-Border Litigation Lawyers in Canada.

Davit has acted in numerous significant and complex matters, including leading and precedent-setting cases, such as the Supreme Court of Canada’s landmark commercial law decision in BCE Inc v. 1976 Debentureholders. His experience also includes acting as counsel in numerous international and domestic class actions and in connection with high-profile cartel investigations.

Davit was recently lead counsel for the Canadian Chamber of Commerce before the Supreme Court of Canada in the Sun-Rype v. Archer Daniels Midland class action appeal, and counsel to the Commissioner of Competition in Canada’s first price maintenance case before the Competition Tribunal. Prior to joining Gowlings, Davit was a partner in the commercial litigation and competition groups of another Toronto law firm. Davit also clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada for The Honourable Madam Justice Louise Arbour.
