McDermott Adds World-Class International Arbitration Partners

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery LLP today announced the appointments of two top international arbitration lawyers, Dr. Sabine Konrad and Lisa Richman, as partners in the Firm’s Frankfurt and Washington, D.C. offices, respectively.  Specializing in the area of international investment treaty arbitration, Konrad and Richman give the Firm valuable new capabilities for navigating disputes between investors and nation states. The two join McDermott from an AmLaw 20 law firm where they worked together as a team.

Konrad has a strong track record of resolving high-profile, cross-border disputes, particularly in the areas of international commercial arbitration and public international law. She regularly advises investors and governments in matters of investment protection.  In 2007, she was designated by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Panel of Arbitrators of the World Bank’s International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), a rare distinction reflecting the high esteem in which she is held there. Konrad also founded the Frankfurt International Arbitration Moot Court, the leading moot court internationally in the investment treaty field, which she has sustained for six years.  She is trilingual in German, English and French.

Richman focuses her practice in the areas of international commercial and investment arbitration, and has extensive experience in internal investigations. She represents corporations, corporate officers and directors and individuals in a variety of regulatory, prosecutorial and private matters.  Richman is bilingual in German and English. She also speaks Spanish and French.

The two partners will add a new dimension to McDermott’s International Arbitration Group, which consists of a coordinated team of lawyers from McDermott’s U.S. and European offices, as well as from MWE China Law Offices.

“It is my great pleasure to welcome Sabine and Lisa to McDermott,” said Lazar P. Raynal, partner and Firm-wide Head of McDermott’s Trial Practice Group. “They are two of the best, younger international arbitration lawyers anywhere and will bolster our skills in this area.  Moreover, they bring to McDermott highly sought-after experience in international investment treaty arbitration while helping us build out our German platform. Our clients will be extremely well served with Sabine and Lisa advocating for their interests.”

“We are delighted that Sabine and Lisa have decided to join the Firm,” said Philipp von Ilberg, partner-in-charge of the Firm’s Frankfurt office. “Sabine is well known in Europe as one of the strongest lawyers in her field, able to offer clients rigorous, thoughtful and formidable representation. She and Lisa will add new depth to our international arbitration and litigation capabilities and allow McDermott to practice across a range of new matters and venues here in Europe and beyond.”
