SNR Denton Advises Al Jazeera on its Launch As A 24-Hour News Channel on Freeview

SNR Denton has advised Al Jazeera on the extension of its multiplex carriage agreement with Arqiva, enabling its international English-language news channel, Al Jazeera English, to begin broadcasting 24-hours daily on Freeview.

Al Jazeera English, the RTS News Channel of the Year, will now be able to broadcast around the clock, significantly increasing its reach and potential viewership. The channel has previously only been featured 5 hours per day on Freeview. In addition to international news coverage, the channel will be broadcasting a range of programmes, investigations and documentaries.

Commenting on the deal, Ingrid Silver, Partner at SNR Denton said: “We were delighted to apply our media industry expertise in helping Al Jazeera extend its English-language coverage in the UK. Through this significant deal, Al Jazeera’s high-quality news will reach a far greater audience than previously.”

“We enjoy a long standing relationship with Al Jazeera, and through our global footprint, which spans regions including the Middle East and the US, we have been able to provide a seamless service to them throughout the years.”

“Al Jazeera English is a household name in the UK and beyond. Through it’s cutting-edge approach to broadcasting as well as its innovative services in the social media space, this makes them an exciting client to work for.”

Freeview, which currently serves approximately 20 million homes, started broadcasting Al Jazeera English 24/7 on Channel 83 on 19 September 2012.

The SNR Denton team was led by partner Ingrid Silver assisted by Stephen Ridgway.
