Former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld Joins Mintz Levin, ML Strategies

Former Massachusetts Governor William F. Weld has joined Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. and ML Strategies, LLC, the firm’s government relations and consulting affiliate, as a Member and Principal, respectively. He will be based in Boston.

Following two terms in office where he earned a reputation as one of the Commonwealth’s most popular governors, Governor Weld established a significant legal and consulting practice focusing on government strategies, corporate and regulatory investigations, complex litigation and legal crisis management. Credited with significantly improving the state’s business climate while in office from 1991-1997, he has remained a prominent and respected figure on the American political scene and in international affairs. A member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Governor Weld has led numerous business and trade missions to countries in Asia, Europe, Latin America and Africa.

“Having made an indelible mark during his career in public service, Bill Weld has skillfully translated his skills into the private sector. Since leaving public life and establishing a highly successful law practice, he has continued to play an important role in domestic and international affairs, while building extensive relationships with major companies around the world,” said R. Robert Popeo, Chairman of Mintz Levin. “His significant experience advising Fortune 100 clients on everything ranging from corporate compliance to international expansion will further strengthen Mintz Levin’s ability to serve our clients.”

“Many of us have had the privilege of seeing first-hand Bill’s laser-like focus on results, whether working on behalf of his constituents or his private sector clients,” said Stephen P. Tocco, President and Chief Executive Officer of ML Strategies. “He has the ability to think strategically and translate that vision into measurable results. We are delighted he has agreed to join the firm and ML Strategies.”

“Mintz Levin has long been one of the most forward-thinking, results-oriented law firms in the industry, having led the way in creating a government affairs and consulting affiliate and establishing an international footprint through thoughtful, strategic growth,” said Governor Weld. “I am delighted to be joining the many friends and colleagues I have come to know at Mintz Levin over the years and look forward to building on our respective synergies.”

A former federal prosecutor, Governor Weld served as the Assistant U.S. Attorney General in charge of the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice and as the U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts during the Reagan administration. Before that, he was a securities and antitrust litigator. Earlier in his career, Governor Weld served as a staff member in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he was involved in the 1974 presidential impeachment inquiry, and for former U.S. Senator Jacob Javits of New York.

Appointed by President George W. Bush, Governor Weld is a member of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and an associate member of the InterAction Council, a group of former world leaders. A graduate of Harvard College, he earned his law degree from Harvard Law School and is admitted to practice in the Massachusetts, New York and the District of Columbia.
