Leading law firm Seyfarth Shaw LLP announced today that partner Michael H. Baniak has joined the Intellectual Property Practice Group of the firm’s Litigation Department. Baniak joins Seyfarth’s Chicago office from McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP.

Baniak’s practice includes all facets of intellectual property transactions, prosecution, counseling and litigation which spans patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret law.

A skilled trial attorney, he has been involved in upwards of 300 intellectual property lawsuits during his career, more than half of which were patent litigation matters. Recent patent infringement litigation cases involved music subscription services, laser sintering, bone prostheses, telecommunications and automobile airbag technology. In addition to his patent practice, Baniak has counseled a variety of clients domestically and internationally in extremely wide-ranging technologies. Besides IP litigation in every area, including before the ITC, he continues to carry a substantial docket of patent, copyright and trademark prosecution, again both domestically and foreign.

“Mike brings his sophisticated and accomplished IP practice to the firm and adds a very broad litigation background and successful track record,” said Brian Michaelis, chair of Seyfarth’s Intellectual Property Practice Group. “With more than 30 years of experience, Mike is an important addition to the group as we continue expanding our IP practice.’

David Rowland, Seyfarth’s Chicago office managing partner added, “As a well-recognized figure of the IP community in Chicago, Mike’s experience strongly complements both our IP and Litigation capabilities, and we look forward to his contributions.”

Baniak has been an adjunct professor of patent and copyright law classes at Northwestern University School of Law since 1986. He is also a frequent lecturer on IP issues, including for the Licensing Executives Society, Management Forum (UK) and the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education.

Baniak earned his B.S. (Physics) cum laude from University of Dayton and his J.D. cum laude from the Indiana University School of Law.
