Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP announced today that Michael A. Yuffee has joined the Firm’s M&A/private equity group, resident in the Washington, DC office. Mr. Yuffee focuses his practice on regulatory, enforcement defense and transactional matters relating to the wholesale energy markets. He brings extensive experience in leading the energy due diligence and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) aspects of M&A and financing transactions, representing clients in energy regulatory proceedings and conducting energy-related litigations and investigations.
Mr. Yuffee regularly represents wholesale power suppliers, financial institutions, power marketers, and integrated energy companies with respect to regulatory facets of the wholesale power and natural gas markets, including the formation and redesign of wholesale electricity markets, electricity transmission access, capacity market development, generation and transmission interconnection issues, natural gas pipeline proceedings, and general administrative and civil litigation matters. Mr. Yuffee also advises clients in structured physical and financial energy transactions, project development transactions, and wholesale power and natural gas transactions. He assists clients with the development of energy regulatory compliance programs and represents clients in both public and non-public investigations and enforcement actions.
Mr. Yuffee is formerly a partner at Hogan Lovells LLP and the head of the FERC regulatory practice at McDermott, Will & Emery LLP. Prior to entering private practice, he was an attorney-advisor in FERC’s Office of Administrative Law Judges, where he assisted in all aspects of electricity and natural gas rate proceedings, mergers and utility restructuring.

Mr. Yuffee is recognized by Chambers Global and Chambers USA in Energy: Electricity (Regulatory & Litigation). He is the former chairman of the Electricity Regulation Committee of the Energy Bar Association.
He received his JD from Washington University in St. Louis School of Law in 1994 and his BA, cum laude, from Boston University in 1991. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia; Maryland; the US Supreme Court; the US Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit; and the US Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit.
