Denise Mayfield Joins Thompson Coburn as a Partner

Thompson Coburn is proud to announce the addition of Denise Mayfield as a partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office. She has joined the firm’s Intellectual Property group.

Ms. Mayfield advises academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies and biotechnology and chemical start-up companies in the protection, licensing and transfer of intellectual property assets, as well as intellectual property portfolio creation and regulatory compliance in NIH federally-supported research.

Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Ms. Mayfield is active in the preparation and prosecution of cutting-edge medical, chemical and pharmaceutical innovations, including stem cells, gene therapy, cloning, vaccines, cancer treatments (oncology) and reproductive medicine. Her practice also includes advising clients in the areas of patentability, inventorship, claim scope and patent infringement.

Prior to her career as an attorney, Ms. Mayfield was a medical researcher in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where her research focused on various aspects of reproductive health and infertility. She also worked in the Department of Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, at Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital, where her research focused on lung cancer.

Ms. Mayfield’s work concerning the effects of pharmacologically active agents (including opioids and cannabinoids) has been published in several respected scientific journals, including Science and Life Sciences, among other peer-reviewed publications. She also participated in the creation of the first scientific journal focused on men’s reproductive health, the Journal of Andrology.

Ms. Mayfield earned her J.D. from St. Mary’s University School of Law. She obtained a B.A. in biology from Trinity University and an M.S. in genetics and physiology at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She is admitted to practice in Washington, D.C., Texas and Colorado.
