Richard Gilly has joined Akerman Senterfitt as a shareholder in the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice Group and will be based in its Washington, D.C. office.
Gilly has nearly 25 years of intellectual property experience with a focus on serving as lead counsel for complex patent infringement litigations. His representations have spanned a wide range of high technologies, including telecommunications, cable, VoIP, networked systems, medical devices, computer hardware and software, semiconductors, electronics, gaming systems, and complex mechanical devices and systems. He also is experienced in strategic patent portfolio management and patent prosecution, rendering opinions, drafting licenses and agreements, and counseling clients on a variety of strategic intellectual property and business issues.
Gilly has devised winning patent strategies for clients in patent disputes. He has managed global patent portfolios, patent application preparation, and world-wide prosecution, as well as drafted and negotiated numerous multi-million dollar international high-technology licenses and agreements. In addition, he has drafted, reviewed and negotiated hundreds of technology agreements including technology transfer agreements, joint development agreements for both hardware and software, joint marketing alliances, consulting agreements, government agreements and university agreements among others. He is admitted to the District of Columbia Bar, New York State Bar, Pennsylvania Bar, Illinois State Bar and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
He is a frequent speaker on patent law developments, including a recent lecture on patent issues in cloud computing at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Gilly is a member of the International Federation of IP Attorneys (FICPI) where he speaks frequently on global software patent issues. He is also a member of the French-American Chamber of Commerce, and has been a member of the Intellectual Property Owners Association Standards Committee, AdvaMed, and the International Visitors Council. He joins from Seyfarth Shaw LLP where he was as a shareholder.
