Baker & Hostetler – Lawrence M. Sung Joins Intellectual Property Group

Baker Hostetler announced that Lawrence M. Sung joined the firm’s Intellectual Property Group as Partner in its Washington, D.C., office. He joins Baker Hostetler from Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP.

Sung is a registered patent attorney with a Ph.D. in microbiology with nearly 20 years’ experience in biotechnology, medical device and pharmaceutical patent counseling, litigation and technology transfer. A former judicial clerk to (now Senior) Circuit Judge Raymond C. Clevenger III of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, he has also been involved extensively in patent appeals.

Sung has served as a consultant to the National Human Genome Research Institute and as a member of the National Academies Standing Committee on Emerging Issues and Data on Environmental Contaminants. He has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary, Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet, and Intellectual Property, on the role of gene patents in research and genetic testing. He received his J.D. from American University Washington College of Law. Sung is a prolific speaker and has authored numerous publications, including three books on patent law. In addition, he is a professor at the University of Maryland School of Law, where he is the director of the Intellectual Property Law Program.

Sung is a member of the American Bar Association and the American Intellectual Property Law Association. He is a past Chair for the Asian-Pacific American Bar Association of the District of Columbia Partners’ Forum and a past Chair of The National Research Council Committee on Intellectual Property Concerns for Toxicogenomics.
