Noted Insurance and Reinsurance Attorney Michael Mullins Joins Day Pitney in Boston

Prominent insurance and reinsurance lawyer Michael P. Mullins has joined Day Pitney LLP as a partner in the firm’s Boston office. Mullins, whose practice focuses on insurance and reinsurance coverage disputes, has arbitrated or litigated more than a dozen cases to final determination over the past decade. Prior to joining Day Pitney, Mullins was a partner at Choate Hall & Stewart LLP in Boston.

“Having worked on cutting-edge insurance and reinsurance cases throughout his career, Mike brings a wealth of experience to the firm,” said Daniel L. FitzMaurice, a partner at Day Pitney and member of its Insurance and Reinsurance Disputes practice group. “In addition to his knowledge of the industry, Mike’s presence in Boston will enable us to broaden our geographic reach in this area of the law.”
Mullins represents cedents, intermediaries and reinsurers in arbitration and litigation proceedings across the United States and abroad. He has worked on complex coverage disputes involving hurricane losses, asbestos and environmental liabilities, and losses arising under builder’s risk and business interruption policies. He also litigates on behalf of companies involved in significant contract disputes and other high-stakes commercial transactions.
Among the cases where Mullins has served as arbitration counsel was a series of large-dollar disputes involving asbestos non-products losses. In a separate action, he was trial counsel in a complex insurance coverage case in federal court concerning alleged business interruption losses, in which damages were sought in excess of $100 million. Mullins successfully tried the damages portion of the case to a jury after obtaining summary judgment, eliminating any bad faith exposure.
“Day Pitney’s insurance and reinsurance lawyers have a strong reputation for offering sophisticated legal counsel on some of the industry’s thorniest legal problems,” said Mullins. “The firm has a depth of experience and a national platform that are a great fit for me and my practice.”
Mullins is a member of ARIAS-U.S., the AIDA Reinsurance and Insurance Arbitration Society. He received a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School and a B.S. from Providence College. His trial experience was recently recognized by the Political Asylum/Immigration Representation Project, which named him Outstanding Pro Bono Detention Attorney for his successful representation of a detained refugee before the U.S. Immigration Court.
