Darryl Steinhause Joins DLA Piper’s Real Estate Capital Markets Group

DLA Piper announced today that Darryl Steinhause has joined the Real Estate Capital Markets group as a partner in the San Diego office. Prior to joining DLA Piper, Steinhause was a partner at Luce Forward LLP.

Steinhause focuses his practice on the structuring and private placement of real estate-related securities and taxation matters. He began his career with New York-based Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP, has practiced in San Diego for the last 25 years and brings 30 years of real estate capital markets experience to DLA Piper.  Steinhause has acted as tax and securities counsel to more than $5 billion in transactions throughout his career.  Nationally recognized for his creative and innovative structures for tax-efficient real estate transactions, he is also credited with developing the industry model for tenant in common (TIC) syndication transactions.  Darryl was recently chosen by the Daily Journal for its prestigious “Top 100 Lawyers” list and the Daily Journal also named him as a 2011 Real Estate Dealmaker of the Year.
“Darryl is recognized as having one of the most sophisticated real estate securities practices in the country,” said Jay Rains, global co-chair of DLA Piper’s Corporate practice. “He truly is a market maker and his practice adds to the strength of our leading securities, real estate, real estate finance and tax practices.”
“Darryl’s practice complements the firm’s strategic objective to expand both our securities and our real estate transactional platform in San Diego, which has been one of the country’s most active markets during the past two years, and it also matches up well with our global footprint,” said Robert Brownlie, managing partner of DLA Piper’s San Diego office. “There is no doubt his innovative approach and deep understanding of real estate capital markets will be a tremendous resource for our clients.”
In addition to his innovation in structuring real estate transactions, Steinhause counsels clients on the negotiation, structuring and restructuring of real estate loans.  Working with sponsors and lenders, he structures financial transactions that maximize the after-tax outcomes for all parties.  He is heavily involved in the formation of publicly registered, non-traded REITs and has been lead counsel with respect to several TIC roll-up transactions into REITs and other entities.
A frequent speaker on industry trends and issues, Steinhause is a former board member of, and currently serves as the General Counsel, for the Real Estate Securities and Investment Association and chaired the Syndication subcommittee of the ABA Section of Taxation – Real Estate Committee.  He has served as an adjunct professor at the University of San Diego School of Law and has been appointed to the San Diego Task Force on Affordable Housing.
Steinhause earned an LLM from New York University, an MBA in Finance and Investment Banking from the University of Wisconsin, a JD from the University of Wisconsin and a BS in Accounting from the University of Florida with high honors.
