Former Executive Javade Chaudhri Rejoins Jones Day as Washington Partner

The global law firm Jones Day has announced that Javade Chaudhri has rejoined the Washington Office as a partner in the Global Disputes Practice. Formerly a corporate and legal executive at Sempra Energy and Gateway, Inc., he will advise broadly on disputes, transactions, and governance issues.

“Javade’s decades of experience as a general counsel and senior executive of two large global companies, combined with his many years of dealing with international transactions and problems, adds a unique dimension to our office and Global Disputes Practice,” said Greg Shumaker, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s Washington Office. “Before he became one of the leaders in the corporate counsel community, he was a terrific law partner here. We were crushed to have him leave us then and are thrilled to have him back now.”

Since 2003, Mr. Chaudhri served as executive vice president, general counsel, and chief compliance officer for Sempra Energy, a Fortune 300 energy services company with natural gas and electric utilities in the U.S., Mexico, and South America as well as liquified natural gas, natural gas and midstream businesses and fossil fuel and renewable power generation plants in the Americas. Prior to that, he was the general counsel, corporate secretary and chief ethics officer of Gateway, Inc., then a $9 billion company with global computer and related technology businesses.

“How to secure the benefits of the rule of law for complex international enterprises is at the core of our mission and Javade’s experience,” said Tim Cullen, head of Jones Day’s Global Disputes Practice. “He knows how law and process interact across a wide range of the globe, which is just the kind of insight and assistance our clients need.”

Mr. Chaudhri advises on significant transactions including domestic and international mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and strategic alliances, as well as representing companies on corporate governance and compliance matters, conducting internal corporate investigations, and handling complex international arbitrations and litigation. He has structured, negotiated, and implemented infrastructure, technology, and other transactions as well as handled arbitrations in numerous countries. He has conducted numerous international investigations relating to the FCPA and other regulatory matters.

A graduate of Georgetown University (J.D. 1980) and Yale University (M.S. 1977; B.S. 1975), Mr. Chaudhri has written and lectured widely on numerous topics and served as a faculty member at universities and institutions in the United States and around the world. He serves on the boards of the University of California’s School of International Relations & Pacific Studies, the Institute of the Americas, the National Judicial College, and the San Diego Zoological Society.
