The global law firm Jones Day has announced that Alexis Gilroy, a nationally recognized e-health lawyer, has joined the Firm as a partner in the Washington Office where she will be part of the Health Care and Life Sciences practices. She joins Jones Day from the Washington office of Nelson Mullins.
Ms. Gilroy focuses her practice in telehealth, a rapidly expanding segment of the health care industry that leverages technology to deliver and improve health and wellness. She currently represents top telehealth providers throughout the U.S. in a variety of transactional and regulatory capacities, as well as provides business and strategic counseling for health care providers, product manufacturers, investors, and others who develop, use, or invest in digital health technology.
“Technology has brought seismic shifts to all industries and it is playing a substantial role in the way health care providers collaborate and communicate with each other and with patients,” said James Dutro, co-chair of Jones Day’s Health Care and Life Sciences practices. “Economic forces, consumer demand, and of course, changes brought about by the Affordable Care Act will drive even greater reliance on technology by health insurers, hospitals, and physicians as they seek to deliver better care with less cost to more patients. Alexis is widely recognized as a leader in this growing segment of the industry and our clients will benefit from her substantial experience. She is an excellent addition to our practice.”
Ms. Gilroy has worked with IT companies to develop web-based platforms to connect physicians with patients through real-time video conferencing and mobile technology, and she has worked on behalf of clients with state medical boards to address the unique legal and regulatory issues that telehealth, telemedicine, and mobile health present. She also advises hospitals and health systems on how better to use telehealth resources to enhance the services that they provide in remote locations, and has developed national compliance strategies for clients focusing on the corporate practice of medicine, state licensing issues, patient consent requirements, and other regulatory matters. Ms. Gilroy’s work has addressed telehealth issues throughout most of the country.
“Alexis’ arrival demonstrates our commitment to the most experienced lawyers — both in Washington and Firmwide — to assist our clients as they encounter unprecedented changes in the regulation and delivery of health care services,” said Greg Shumaker, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s Washington Office. “Since state law primarily governs the practice of medicine and the provision of medical services, and these laws have lagged the pace of digital health technology, the legal landscape for telehealth is extremely difficult and challenging to navigate. Alexis will be of immense value to our clients with interests in these areas.”
Ms. Gilroy earned her J.D. from American University Washington College of Law, and her B.A. with distinction and honors from the University of North Carolina. She chairs the Business & Finance Group of the American Telemedicine Association, and is a Leader of the Telemedicine & E-Health Affinity Group of the American Health Lawyers Association. She also serves on special work groups of the Federation of State Medical Boards and the Maryland Health Care Commission.
