Amit Kalra Joins Troutman Sanders’ Tax and Energy Project Development and Finance Practices

Troutman Sanders LLP is pleased to announce that Amit Kalra has joined the firm as a partner in the firm’s Tax and Energy Project Development and Finance practices. He will practice out of the firm’s Chicago office.

Kalra, who was a partner at Winston & Strawn LLP, focuses on the financing of renewable energy assets that benefit from significant Federal and state income tax incentives. He has represented both large scale developers of wind and solar assets and the financial institutions that provide tax equity financing for such facilities. He has experience with all of the tax equity financing structures currently in the market. Kalra has led the tax side of over 4200MW of partnership flip tax equity transactions for wind projects and closed more than 50MW of distributed and utility scale solar financings. Over the last several years, he has represented clients in closing nearly $4 billion of tax equity investments to finance over $8 billion of renewable energy assets.

In addition to his focus on project financing of renewable energy assets, Kalra has significant experience in all types of transactions involving tax partnerships, including private equity and hedge fund formation and limited partner investment, portfolio company acquisitions and dispositions, and operating company direct investments.

“We are delighted that Amit has joined the firm,” said Cliff Sikora, a Chair of the firm’s Energy Department. “He brings a wealth of cutting edge tax and deal experience, including with regard to the acquisition and financing of renewable energy assets. His experience will be of tremendous benefit to clients undertaking complex financing transactions and ownership structures.”

“I have known Amit for years and respect his insightful approach to tax law and the extraordinary confidence he has earned with his clients,” said Craig Kline, a leading renewable energy lawyer and Troutman Sanders partner. “He brings significant depth in wind and solar partnership tax, and his experience will be of great value to financial institutions, developers and utilities navigating the evolving tax landscape.”

Troutman Sanders has been involved in over $37 billion in funding/debt issued for energy companies. Since 2007, the firm has served as counsel in over 300 solar transactions in the United States, including projects located in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Florida, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. These transactions include utility-scale power plants and commercial and residential customer-sited distributed generation systems. The firm represents investors, developers and utilities in all aspects of renewable energy project development, finance, corporate and M&A transactions.

“Troutman Sanders is regarded as one of the leading energy firms, with a proven track record representing utilities and other stakeholders in energy financing, corporate structuring, regulatory and litigation matters,” said Kalra. “The firm’s deep bench in the energy industry, including its very successful renewable energy practice, makes this an ideal platform for my clients and practice.”
