Eversheds Sutherland Continues IP and Life Sciences Practice Expansion With European Lateral Partner Hire

Eversheds Sutherland is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Anette Gärtner to Partner in its soon to be opened Frankfurt office. Anette will be joining the firm’s commercial practice from Reed Smith, where she has been partner for the past seven years.

As a highly experienced IP practitioner and patent litigator, Anette has a focus on patent and employee invention law, as well as other ‘hard IP’ matters, such as know-how and trade secrets disputes, particularly in the Life Sciences and TMT sectors. She has extensive experience in both contentious and non-contentious work, such as licensing, cooperation agreements, joint venture agreements, employee inventor disputes and patent infringement cases. She is dual-qualified (Germany and England/Wales), and partnered with her experience in EU law, she is one of only a few German lawyers to have worked on cases involving the European Commission, and heard by the European Court of Justice and the UK Supreme Court, respectively.

Anette is also well placed to provide support on large scale pharmaceutical matters, including clinical trial projects involving universities, and corporate transactions with a significant tech element where the core assets of the target are those involving data or algorithms.

Her dual qualification means she has a broad range of experience with multi-jurisdictional disputes, working on matters across jurisdictions including the UK, France, the US and Japan. Her cross-border work has seen her involved on many mid-sized and high-value infringement disputes, all of which had a German element.

Tobias Maier, Head of Commercial (Germany) and Global Co-Head of Health & Life Sciences at Eversheds Sutherland, commented:

“I am delighted to welcome Anette to the team. She has a deep understanding of international disputes and, with her on board, we will be well placed to support our clients on all cross-border and EU patent litigations. Germany is an international hub for patent litigation and with the Unified Patent Court going live in 2023, Anette’s appointment comes at the perfect time to further cement us as trusted professionals in this competitive patent disputes market.”

Helen Thomas, European Managing Partner, Eversheds Sutherland, commented:

“I am thrilled that Anette will be joining the team. This is an important step towards building a competitive offering for our EU full-service IP capabilities and, together with our other recent hires in the UK and US, hugely bolsters our European sector offering, especially in Life Sciences and TMT. This is also the next exciting step towards ensuring we are fulfilling our vision of a global Eversheds Sutherland IP practice.”

Anette Gärtner, Partner, Eversheds Sutherland, commented:

“I am delighted to be joining the team at Eversheds Sutherland, especially at a time when they are hugely committed to building an international patent litigation group. The firm already has well-known patent litigators in other jurisdictions, and I am excited about the experience the team now boasts. I look forward to becoming a member of both a thriving German IP group and a growing European patent litigation team.”

Anette’s appointment is the latest in a string of high profile hires for the firm’s patent and IP team and closely follows the hiring of partners Indradeep Bhattacharya, who joined the firm in September this year and David Wilkinson, who joined in May 2022.
