BakerHostetler’s DADM Practice Group Expands in Dallas with the Addition of Craig Carpenter

BakerHostetler announced today that Craig Carpenter has joined the firm as a partner in its Dallas office. Carpenter will serve as a member of the firm’s Digital Assets and Data Management (DADM) Practice Group on the Privacy Governance and Technology Transactions team. Carpenter comes to the firm from Thompson & Knight LLP in Dallas.

Carpenter is a technology attorney who focuses on tech transactions, intellectual property (IP), licensing, branding and marketing, entertainment, and social media. His background consists of a unique combination of trademark, copyright, digital media, licensing and data privacy experience, enabling him to develop business-minded solutions for clients across a variety of industries and including individuals, startups and multinational companies.

“Texas remains a strategic geographic area of focus for our group because we service such a wide cross section of industries based in the state, including health care, retail, education and energy,” said Ted Kobus, chair of the DADM Practice Group. “Craig will not only help us better service our Texas-based clients, but he also brings additional depth related to transactions involving technology, privacy and security issues.”

Carpenter regularly advises clients on technology and IP issues in mergers, acquisitions and IP transactions, as well as in the context of data monetization, enforcement actions, technology-focused service agreements (software as a service, hardware as a service), entertainment, media, and online marketing and branding. In the cybersecurity and data privacy arena, he counsels clients on matters involving the collection and protection of confidential and personal information, including implementing compliance programs and preparing for and responding to data breaches. Carpenter also counsels clients on Internet compliance and enforcement issues, including website and social media policies and terms of use, digital and social advertising reviews and app development.

“BakerHostetler’s Digital Assets and Data Management Practice Group touches all components of the data life cycle, and its cross-disciplinary teams and deep bench will provide me with a robust set of resources when it comes to finding the best business solutions for my clients,” said Carpenter.

“The group’s attorneys are recognized for understanding their clients’ businesses and operations and providing simple and actionable advice to implement strategic solutions. I look forward to combining my experience with the team both nationally and in the Dallas market,” he added.

Carpenter has almost a decade of experience working in data privacy and technology transactions in the Dallas region. He was named to D Magazine’s list of Best Lawyers in Dallas in 2021 and Best Lawyers Under 40 in 2020, and he was named a 2021 Texas Rising Star by Thompson Reuters. Carpenter is a 2021 graduate of the Business Council for the Arts Leadership Arts Institute. He earned his J.D. from SMU Dedman School of Law and his B.S. from Clemson University.

“Craig is a highly regarded tech transactions, IP and data privacy attorney in Texas, and we are delighted to have him join the firm,” said Shawn Cleveland, partner-in-charge of BakerHostetler’s Dallas office. “He is a welcome addition as we work to continually expand the firm’s DADM Practice Group and our Dallas office, both of which were established in 2020.”

The DADM Practice Group is a convergence practice addressing enterprise risks, disputes, compliance and opportunities throughout the life cycle of data, technology, advertising and innovation, including brand strategies and monetization. The practice group integrates seven service teams — Digital Risk Advisory and Cybersecurity; Advertising, Marketing and Digital Media; Privacy Governance and Technology Transactions; Healthcare Privacy and Compliance; Privacy and Digital Risk Class Action and Litigation; Digital Transformation and Data Economy; and Emerging Technology.
