Philip M. Oliss Joins Jones Day in Cleveland as Partner in Firm’s Business & Tort Litigation Practice

The global law firm Jones Day announces that Philip M. Oliss has joined the Firm’s Business & Tort Litigation Practice and is based in its Cleveland Office. Before joining the firm, Oliss was a Partner at the Cleveland Branch of Squire Patton Boggs.

Mr. Oliss has more than 20 years of civil litigation experience, including first chair trial experience in state and federal courts throughout the US. His practice is focused on complex civil litigation, with an emphasis on consumer class action defense, and business restructuring-related litigation.

“Phil brings deep, wide-ranging experience, and a track-record of accomplishment in leading and resolving numerous trials and disputes,” said Stephanie Parker, co-leader of Jones Day’s Business & Tort Litigation Practice. “He adds even more firepower to our leading litigation practice and I welcome him to the Firm.”

Mr. Oliss’ experience in consumer class action defense includes successfully defending Fortune 500 clients in nationwide and multistate class action litigation involving allegations of consumer fraud, false advertising and product defects. He has recently served as lead counsel for a Korean manufacturer and US distributor of consumer electronics and appliances in various multistate putative class actions involving alleged violations of consumer protection statutes and other claims. Mr. Oliss has also recently successfully defended a nationwide chain of bakery-cafés and the world’s largest musical instrument retailer against allegations of false advertising.

“Phil’s emphasis on complex civil litigation, consumer class actions, and litigation related to business restructuring, is an excellent complement to our deep bench of litigators in Cleveland,” said Heather Lennox, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s Cleveland Office. “Our clients will benefit greatly from his experience and we look forward to his contributions.”

Mr. Oliss was a judicial clerk to the Honorable Frederick N. Young of the Ohio Court of Appeals. He also has taught courses on appellate advocacy as an adjunct assistant professor of law at Case Western Reserve University. Mr. Oliss has been twice appointed to the Advisory Committee to the US District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. He also is president of the board of directors of the Cleveland Public Theatre.
