Dykema Expands Its IP Depth With the Addition of Michael J. Word in Chicago

Dykema, a leading national law firm, today announced the addition of Michael Word as a Member of its Intellectual Property Department resident in the firm’s Chicago office. Word joins Dykema after practicing at Mayer Brown LLP in Chicago and New York for 15 years. The addition of Word helps to expand Dykema’s acclaimed IP practice.

In his practice, Word represents some of the world’s leading technology companies as both plaintiffs and defendants. He has handled more than 40 federal district court patent litigation matters and International Trade Commission (ITC) investigations and more than 20 proceedings at the Patent Trials and Appeals Board (PTAB). In addition, Word has represented clients in matters before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and before American Arbitration Association (AAA) panels.

In his work with dispute resolution matters, Word covers a variety of complex technologies, including wired and wireless communications, vehicle telematics and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), semiconductor devices, cloud computing and distributed networking, optics and displays, enterprise security systems, network identity management, light emitting diodes (LEDs), liquid crystal displays (LCDs), data storage systems, software as a service (SaaS), biomedical devices, industrial systems, and numerous consumer electronics.

Word also advises clients on all aspects of IP portfolio development and management. He counsels on strategies for developing and protecting IP both in the U.S. and abroad. As a registered patent attorney, Word prosecutes critical, high-value patent applications in front of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Additionally, he counsels clients on a variety of transactions involving emerging technologies, including licensing and joint ventures. Drawing on his extensive technical background, Word’s practice covers a variety of emerging technologies including artificial intelligence (AI) (including large language models, and deep learning neural networks), blockchain, digital assets and cryptocurrency, and cloud computing.

“We are very excited to grow our IP practice with an attorney as accomplished as Michael,” said Harry Arger, Managing Member of Dykema’s Chicago office. “His background in technology and experience with tech companies will certainly add to the breadth of our practice and provide a tremendous resource for Dykema’s clients.”

“I’m excited to join such a dynamic and excellent firm,” said Word. “Dykema is well-known nationally for delivering exceptional legal service across the board, with strong litigation and transactional practices. It was a natural fit with my practice. I look forward to leveraging my experience to expand the firm’s strong and thriving IP practice, and collaborating with all their exceptional attorneys.”

Word earned a J.D., cum laude, from the Northwestern University School of Law, as well as an M.S. in Electrical Engineering and a B.S. in Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.
