McGuireWoods Adds Veteran Federal Prosecutor Kurt Meyers to White Collar Practice in Charlotte

Kurt W. Meyers, who led criminal trials and managed complex investigations as a federal prosecutor in the Western District of North Carolina, has joined McGuireWoods’ Government Investigations and White Collar Litigation Department as a partner in Charlotte.

Meyers served for 11 years in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, most recently as chief of its criminal division. He was lead or co-lead counsel in 16 federal jury trials involving matters such as accounting, securities and bank fraud; tax evasion; money laundering; and obstruction of justice.

Meyers co-founded the Western District’s Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force, led its Bank Secrecy Act Team and oversaw parallel proceedings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Commodities Futures Trading Commission and other agencies.

Among his many successes, Meyers led the investigation and prosecution of a former Fortune 500 homebuilding company for accounting and origination fraud, resulting in a $50 million deferred prosecution agreement.

“Kurt’s experience leading complex investigations and important trials will bring big benefits to our clients as they deal with a very challenging enforcement and compliance environment,” said John Adams, chair of the firm’s Government Investigations and White Collar Litigation Department. “Kurt is a welcome addition to our deep bench of talented attorneys with significant government experience in North Carolina and nationwide.”

“Kurt’s stellar reputation precedes him. He is well-known and highly respected for his service in the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” said Scott Vaughn, managing partner of McGuireWoods’ Charlotte office. “We are delighted to welcome him to the office and the firm.”

McGuireWoods is ranked among the world’s top investigations firms in 2016’s GIR 100, a guide to leading cross-border investigations practices based on independent research by Global Investigations Review. In addition, the firm was honored as a “Litigation Powerhouse” for outstanding U.S. and international work, including government investigations and white collar litigation, by Law360, which also has singled out the white collar team as a Practice Group of the Year.

“McGuireWoods has a well-deserved reputation for excellence in white collar representation here in North Carolina and internationally,” Meyers said. “I’m looking forward to putting my years of government experience to work to make a difference for our clients.”
