Cooley Adds Capital Markets Partner in Beijing

Ethan Jin has joined Cooley as a partner in the firm’s global capital markets practice. Based in Beijing, Jin brings significant experience in taking companies public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, as well as in Hong Kong public M&A. He arrives from Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.

“Our capital markets practice in Hong Kong continues to quickly establish itself as a leader in that key IPO center – and adding a well-versed practitioner like Ethan with a superior reputation among companies and banks will further bolster our capabilities as the deals continue to come in,” said Charlie Kim, co-head of Cooley’s global capital markets practice alongside David Peinsipp. “We are thrilled to welcome Ethan to the team.”

“Many of our Asian technology company clients are based in Beijing, and having Ethan on our team will afford us great client coverage and allow us to fortify our reputation in China’s capital,” said Peinsipp. “His impressive deal list and collaborative spirit makes him a great addition to our global team.”

Jin’s practice focuses on securities and corporate transactions in the Greater China region, including Hong Kong IPOs, pre-IPO private equity investments, investments in and corporate governance of HKEX-listed companies, private placements, public and private M&A, and compliance. He advises clients in many industries and has led the execution of dozens of Hong Kong IPOs, representing both issuers and underwriters. Jin, a native Mandarin speaker, obtained his LLM from Stanford, and is licensed to practice in Hong Kong and New York.

“Cooley’s impressive reputation, platform of specialists built to work with the most sophisticated disruptive companies and their bankers, fast-growing presence in Asia and strong collaborative culture made this role incredibly attractive to me,” said Jin. “I look forward to helping take this acclaimed global team to the next level.”

Jin’s hire follows the recent additions of capital markets partner Yiming Liu in Shanghai and public companies duo Rupa Briggs and Nicolas Dumont in New York. With Jin joining the firm, Cooley’s Asia capital markets team now includes more than 30 lawyers and professional staff across Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai. The team recently advised Coupang, one of Asia’s largest ecommerce companies, on its $4.55 billion initial public offering, and worked on Grab’s proposed merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), which marked the largest SPAC merger in history.
