Akerman Senterfitt Takes on New Of Counsel

Monesia Taylor Brown has joined Akerman Senterfitt as Of Counsel.  Brown will be stationed at the Tallahassee, Florida office, and will practice in the Government Affairs and Public Policy Group.  Prior to joining Akerman, she spent ten years in public service in the State of Florida. The last two years, Brown spent as Director of the Agency for Workforce Innovation (AWI).

1300 Legal Jobs Gone Bye-Bye in January

The US Department of Labor has reported that the US legal profession has lost 1300 jobs in the month of January.  This number appears much smaller when compared to the number of jobs lost in all fields: 598,000.  About half of the 3.6 million jobs lost since the start of the recession (December ’07) were lost in the last three months.  Let’s get back to law firms. The list of firm’s to have announced job cuts in the month of January include: Akin Gump, Cooley Godward, Fish & Richardson, Foley Hoag, McDermott Will, and Morrison & Foerster.

The Numbers for 2008 US Laterals

Top US law firms have made a new a record. Legal Week has calculated a total of 2,509 partner laterals in the span of 2008.  This number includes laterals from firm mergers, as well as those taken in by dissolved firms.  K&L Gates tops the list with 185 partner laterals.  Reed Smith comes in second with 74, DLA Piper has had 58, followed by Jones Day with 57. Akin Gump has lost more partners than all other firm’s with its grand loss of 59 partners.  Heller Ehrman comes in second with 47 and Thelen, who has lost 46, comes in third.  Following Thelen, Mayer Brown has lost 45 partners.

Vale Joins Austin Firm Pirkey Barber

Pirkey Barber LLP has hired Shannon T. Vale. Vale worked with the firm’s co-founders, Lou Pirkey and Bill Barber at Austin firm, Arnold White & Durkee. Pirkey & Barber left in 2006 to start their own firm. Vale has over 25 years of experience in trademark law. Pirkey Barber has also hired Alison Davis Frey, who has over 10 years of trademark experience.
