Pillsbury Expands National Litigation Practice with Addition of Partner Jean Kuei

Pillsbury today announced the addition of distinguished labor and employment lawyer Jean Kuei as a partner in the firm’s Litigation section. Kuei represents national employers in various types of labor and employment matters and comes to Pillsbury from Reed Smith. Reflective of her bi-coastal practice, she will be based in Washington, DC while also regularly working out of the firm’s San Francisco and Los Angeles offices.

Kuei represents major companies across a wide array of industries, with a particular emphasis on the retail, financial and automobile sectors. She provides counsel in matters ranging from single-plaintiff discrimination and harassment lawsuits to multi-plaintiff wage and hour class actions. She also has defended clients in accessibility cases under the American with Disabilities Act and corresponding state laws.

“Jean is a dynamic young partner whose track record of high-quality work and exceptional client service for major national companies speaks for itself,” said Litigation Practice Section Leader Deborah Baum. “Her energy and experience will fit beautifully with our national Labor & Employment team, and she brings additional trial experience to our already deep bench of commercial trial lawyers. We’re thrilled to welcome her.”

Kuei’s representative experience includes securing full dismissal of a systemic discrimination complaint on behalf of a Fortune 100 NYSE bank; obtaining judgment in favor of a defendant in a disability discrimination and retaliation claim for a national retail chain in arbitration; obtaining a favorable bench decision for a defendant in a negligent misrepresentation claim in the DC Superior Court; securing summary judgment in favor of a large mortgage company on a nine-count complaint in a California court; and securing dismissal of a tortious conduct and breach of contract claim in favor of a notable sports agent before an arbitrator appointed by the National Football League’s Players’ Association.

“Jean’s arrival marks a continuation of Pillsbury’s strategic efforts to grow across many of our key offices and practices and bolsters our solid track record of success at trial,” said Firm Chair David Dekker. “She is already an outstanding litigator and leader with an even brighter future ahead, and we’re delighted to have someone of her caliber join us.”

Kuei frequently presents management training programs around the prevention and handling of workplace challenges and speaks on employment law topics such as sexual harassment, workplace investigations and diversity initiatives. She serves on the Leadership Advisory Committee for the National Women’s Law Center and the Executive Committee for the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity. She was a 2016 recipient of the Greater Washington Urban League’s President’s Award and was selected by her firm as a 2016 Leadership Council on Legal Diversity Fellow. She is licensed to practice in California and Washington, DC.

“Pillsbury’s people, platform and vision make it a great fit for my practice,” Kuei said. “The firm is deeply committed to diversity, retains top talent and has a reputation for delivering excellent client service and results. I am excited to join a team of such trusted client advisors and partners to some of the world’s largest industry titans.”
