Blank Rome Welcomes Tax Partner in Washington, D.C.

Blank Rome LLP is pleased to welcome Scott DeMartino to the Firm as a Partner in the Washington, D.C., office’s Tax group. Mr. DeMartino focuses his practice on real estate and renewable investments using renewable energy tax credits, historic rehabilitation tax credits, and new markets tax credits. He joins Blank Rome from Bryan Cave LLP, where he was counsel.

“The world of tax credits is constantly shifting—be it newer credits, like those for renewable energy sources, or frequent updates to revenue procedures,” said Alan J. Hoffman, Blank Rome’s Chairman and Managing Partner. “Scott’s experience in these areas, as well as his notable work with historic and underserved communities, will be an excellent complement to our Firm’s offerings and add significant value for our clients.”

Mr. DeMartino began his career as a senior tax advisor for two national accounting firms, and draws upon this experience when teaming with clients to structure real estate and renewable investments that yield economic, cultural, and sustainable community benefits to investment partners. In particular, he advises lenders, investors, developers, and nonprofit sponsors on how best to utilize historic rehabilitation tax credits, new markets tax credits, as well as renewable energy tax credits as sources of project financing. These investment tools bring much needed capital to construct and rehabilitate health care centers, charter schools, and residential rental and commercial facilities, as well as historical arts and community spaces and renewable energy facilities, many in historic or underserved communities. For instance, he assisted a national investor in rehabilitating Baltimore’s historic Town Theatre, which today houses Everyman Theatre.

“I am thrilled to join Blank Rome’s nationally recognized tax group and have the opportunity to work with the Washington, D.C., team led by Michael Sanders, and be a part of their significant practice. It will be invigorating to collaborate with Mike and draw upon his knowledge as a leader in new markets tax credit and historic tax credit transactions, and his nearly 40 years of experience serving as a tax professor in the graduate program at Georgetown Law and at The George Washington University Law School,” said Mr. DeMartino. “In addition to working together with and further growing the Firm’s talented tax group, I am looking forward to working alongside, and tapping into the deep experience of, other industry leaders across Blank Rome, including those in commercial real estate development, finance, securities, energy, and environmental, who will support my practice and clients.”

Mr. DeMartino’s passion for the community and historic preservation extends beyond his legal work, as he was recently elected vice president of Washington, D.C.’s Preservation League, of which he also chairs the Governance Committee.

Joining Mr. DeMartino at Blank Rome is senior paraprofessional, Steven Dinolfo, also from Bryan Cave.

Mr. DeMartino received his LL.M. from New York University, his J.D. from Washington and Lee University, and his B.A. from Bates College.
