Troutman Sanders Expands Intellectual Property Practice in San Francisco

Troutman Sanders LLP announces the addition of Michael Heafey to its Intellectual Property practice as a partner in the San Francisco office. Heafey joins Troutman Sanders from King & Spalding’s Silicon Valley office.

Heafey has a comprehensive litigation practice with a focus on patents and trade secrets. He represents companies in district court, at the International Trade Commission, before the Patent & Trademark Office and before the Federal Circuit. He advises a broad range of clients in intellectual property matters and has developed a particular focus on U.S. and foreign companies in the semiconductor fabrication, integrated circuit and memory and storage industries.

“Our IP group prides itself on creating value for high-technology clients by building teams of trial attorneys that also have real experience with the relevant technology,” said Bill Withrow, Chair of Troutman Sanders Litigation Department. “Mike’s significant trial experience and deep knowledge of electronics in patent and trade secret litigation complement our IP team’s strength in software and consumer technology and our growing presence in IP litigation,” Withrow added.

Craig Kline, Managing Partner of the firm’s San Francisco office, said, “We are continuing to follow a growth strategy in San Francisco, and across all of our West Coast offices, broadening the scope of our practices as clients’ needs expand. To be able to add Mike’s specialized experience and track record of success to our team is an asset to our clients and the firm.”

With the addition of Heafey, Troutman Sanders has added fourteen lateral partners on the West Coast in the past two years. The firm has continued to expand its capabilities in areas, including corporate, intellectual property, litigation, cybersecurity, finance, life sciences, and technology. The firm now has close to 100 lawyers practicing in San Francisco, Orange County, San Diego, and Portland.

“Troutman Sanders’ culture of partnering with clients to achieve their most critical business goals is a perfect fit for my clients,” said Mike Heafey. “The fact that the firm has been able to steadily grow its West Coast capabilities by bringing in partners from established competitors is a testament to the clients’ belief in the value that Troutman Sanders brings.”

Heafey received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley and his J.D. from Georgetown University.
