Meredith Bushnell, Experienced Trust & Estates Partner, Joins Expanding San Francisco Office

Venable LLP announced today that Meredith R. Bushnell has joined the firm’s San Francisco office as a partner in the Tax and Wealth Planning practice. Ms. Bushnell comes from Arnold & Porter, where she was counsel in the firm’s trust and estates practice.

Ms. Bushnell provides estate planning and wealth management advice for high-net-worth individuals, family businesses, and individuals with complicated estates. She handles all aspects of planning for the accrual and distribution of wealth, whether involving charitable giving, distributions, or otherwise. She also has particular expertise in the formation and support of charitable and family foundations.

At Venable, Ms. Bushnell joins a dynamic tax and wealth planning practice regarded as one of the elite groups in the country. The more than 60-attorney group has a number of top-ranked attorneys concentrating on tax, sophisticated estate planning including the preservation and protection of wealth for generations of families, the establishment and advising of private foundations, and other services for high-net-worth clients and family offices. Ms. Bushnell was recently recognized by Chambers USA as one of the top attorneys in the nation for Wealth Management, and, in 2015, the Daily Journal named her to its annual list of “Top Women Lawyers.”

“We are excited to welcome Meredith to Venable and continue the growth of not only our San Francisco office, which has tripled in size since opening in 2013, but the firm-wide Tax and Wealth Planning Group, which has seen several high-profile additions over the past year,” said James E. Nelson, Partner-in-Charge of the firm’s San Francisco office.

“I am extremely pleased to join a firm with the breadth and depth of talent that Venable has, not only in the wealth management area, but in the robust and impressive tax practice,” said Ms. Bushnell. “The firm has an impressive tax team as well, including Friedemann Thomma, whose international tax experience is of interest to my clients who have business and personal matters around the globe.”

In addition to Ms. Bushnell, Venable’s Tax and Wealth Planning Group has seen several notable additions this past year, including Mr. Thomma in San Francisco. Last month the group added Grace Chung in Los Angeles, and a three-person team, including American College of Trust and Estate Counsel Fellow Douglas L. Siegler, Carolyn P. Vinson, and Emily A. Plocki, joined the Washington DC office earlier this year.

“Meredith is a strong addition to the group of nearly 90 attorneys that Venable now has in California, and she reflects the high-caliber attorneys that we are looking to attract as we continue to grow,” said Douglas C. Emhoff, Managing Director of Venable’s West Coast offices. “Meredith’s practice has many natural synergies with attorneys throughout the firm, especially those within our well-known Tax and Wealth Planning Group in Los Angeles.”

Ms. Bushnell received her LLM from New York University School of Law, a JD from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, magna cum laude, Order of the Coif, and a BA from the University of California, Los Angeles.
