Goodwin Procter Strengthens Technology & Life Sciences Group with William Growney in Silicon Valley

Goodwin Procter, a leading Am Law 50 and Global 50 law firm, announced today that William Growney is joining the firm as a partner in its Technology & Life Sciences Group and will be resident in the firm’s Silicon Valley office. Growney has more than 20 years’ industry experience working as both in-house and outside counsel, and advises technology and other start-ups on matters involving financing, M&A, corporate governance, licensing/IP and privacy and data security.

“Bill’s expertise, particularly in advising early-stage companies, significantly increases our bench strength and our ability to serve a growing roster and range of technology clients,” said Anthony McCusker, chair of Goodwin’s Technology Companies Practice.

“We are very pleased Bill has chosen to join Goodwin Procter, as we continue to increase the depth and breadth of our Silicon Valley office, and invest in expanding our talent footprint in California,” added Lynda Galligan, chair of the firm’s Silicon Valley office.

Growney comes to the firm from Bay Area technology company and Goodwin client RichRelevance, where he served as General Counsel. Previously, he has held executive leadership, management and legal roles for various publicly held and venture-backed companies, including for entities focused on online music (Napster – NASDAQ: NAPS) and social media (imeem). Growney received his J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School and his undergraduate degree from University of California at Berkeley. He can be reached at or (650) 752-3203.

Growney’s arrival at Goodwin in Silicon Valley follows that of Cindy McAdam, former President and CEO of Xapo, who joined the firm as a partner three weeks ago.

Goodwin, with more than 140 attorneys in California, first established its West Coast presence in 2006, opening offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco. It expanded in 2007 with an office in Silicon Valley.

The firm’s Technology Companies Practice focuses on start-up financing, intellectual property, corporate partnering, public offerings and mergers and acquisitions. One of the largest tech practices in the United States, the group represents more than 1,000 technology and life science companies, 200 venture capital and private equity firms and many of the leading investment banks worldwide. With expertise in industry sectors including software, hardware, online content and commerce, IT services, fintech, clean tech, biopharma, medical devices and healthcare IT, among others, the group combines significant capital markets and public company capabilities with a commitment to serving emerging companies and venture capital clients.
