Renowned Securities Litigator Joins Cooley

Securities litigator Patrick Gibbs has joined Cooley as a partner in the Palo Alto office. He joins from Latham & Watkins where he was a partner and former co-chair of its securities litigation and professional liability practice.

Gibbs specializes in securities class actions and derivative litigation, SEC investigations and enforcement proceedings and internal corporate investigations. His clients include public and private companies, venture capital and private equity firms and investment banks in a variety of industries including, tech, semiconductors, biotech, life sciences and medical devices.

“Patrick is widely considered to be one of the finest securities litigators in the country,” said Michael Attanasio, head of Cooley’s global litigation department. “He will further strengthen our market-leading securities litigation group and offer our clients another trial lawyer who excels in the courtroom and in the boardroom. Patrick’s exemplary track record of success will add to Cooley’s deep litigation bench and complement the culture of winning advocacy that makes us the first choice for leading companies, directors and officers in Silicon Valley and beyond.”

According to Thomson Reuters Monitor Suite, Cooley was the most active securities litigation defense firm in the United States in 2015. It has defended more pharmaceutical companies in securities class actions filed over the past five years than any other law firm.

“Cooley’s growth, momentum and reputation are on an extraordinary trajectory,” Gibbs said. “The firm is home to an impressive group of trial lawyers, and I look forward to helping to grow what is already one of the preeminent securities litigation groups in the US.”

Prior to joining Latham, Gibbs was a law clerk for Judge William D. Keller of the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Gibbs received his BS from Santa Clara University and his JD from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law.
