Shearman & Sterling is representing American Sugar Refining, Inc. (American Sugar), which has agreed to acquire a controlling interest in Belize Sugar Industries Limited (BSI). American Sugar, along with its subsidiaries, is the world's largest sugar refiner, with a production capacity exceeding 7 million tons of sugar per year. The company and its affiliates have operations in Florida, California, Louisiana, New York, Maryland, Canada, Mexico, England and Portugal and its products are sold under the Domino®, C&H®, Florida Crystals®, Redpath®, Jack Frost® and Tate & Lyle® brands. BSI, headquartered in the Orange Walk District of Belize, is Belize's sole processor of sugarcane, in addition to being a substantial producer of sugarcane in its own right.
