Sung Hwang Joins Venable’s Growing National Tax and Wealth Planning Practice as Partner in New York

Continuing to build one of the nation’s elite Tax and Wealth Planning practices, Venable LLP announced today that Sung Hyun Hwang has joined the firm as a partner in its New York office. Mr. Hwang joins Venable from Herrick Feinstein LLP, where he was a counsel.

Mr. Hwang focuses his practice on the full spectrum of business tax law, from complex structured financial products to multi-partner business joint ventures. He has significant experience in domestic and cross-border transactions involving real estate partnerships and funds, private equity funds, hedge funds, asset managers, family offices, and financial institutions. Mr. Hwang also has significant experience in the tax credit space, including the energy-based tax credit area. He frequently represents clients before the IRS and state and local tax authorities in connection with tax ruling requests and audits, as well as in litigation in the U.S. Tax Court. Mr. Hwang began his legal career with Clifford Chance LLP and Hogan Lovells, and also worked at the National Office of the IRS in the Office of Chief Counsel, in Washington, DC.

“Venable is building one of the country’s strongest tax and wealth planning practices, and the addition of Sung is key as we expand the practice into New York. With a new administration taking office, we’re likely to see some significant changes in the tax laws, and our clients will need someone like Sung to navigate these changes,” said Partner-in-Charge of the New York office Matthew McLaughlin.

“Venable’s efforts in building a premier national tax and wealth planning practice and their broader platform as a full-service firm makes them a natural fit for me because it will greatly benefit my clients’ needs,” said Mr. Hwang. “Additionally, the firm’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is, without question, one of their greatest strengths. Their openness and willingness to accept change and take on new challenges is a great reflection on them in the community, and I’m looking forward to building my practice with a firm that embodies these values.”

At Venable, Mr. Hwang joins a rapidly growing Tax and Wealth Planning practice that has seen several high-profile additions across the country in the past year. With more than 60 attorneys nationwide, the group has a number of top-ranked attorneys concentrating on domestic and international tax, sophisticated estate planning that includes the preservation and protection of wealth for generations of families, the establishment and advising of private foundations, and other services for high-net-worth clients and family offices.

In addition to his legal career, Mr. Hwang is an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve and previously served with the New York Army National Guard. In 2008, he deployed to Afghanistan with a New York Army National Guard infantry unit as part of the Operation Enduring Freedom. He earned his LL.M in taxation and his J.D. from New York University School of Law in 2002 and 2000, respectively, and his B.A. from City University of New York, Hunter College, in 1995, graduating summa cum laude.
