Global law firm Shearman & Sterling has expanded its global Intellectual Property & Technology Litigation practice with the addition of partners Mark Hannemann, Thomas Makin and Matthew Berkowitz from Kenyon & Kenyon LLP. They will join the firm as partners in New York.

Hannemann has considerable first-chair experience for both plaintiffs and defendants in jury trials, bench trials and International Trade Commission hearings, with frequent appearances in the Eastern District of Texas, the District of Delaware and other US district courts. He also has a well-established appellate practice.
Makin’s practice focuses on patent litigation in federal court and before the International Trade Commission. Makin regularly appears before the US Patent and Trademark Office and advises clients regarding both substantive patent law and patent valuation and licensing issues. He has worked across a wide range of technological fields, including vehicular safety and propulsion systems, LEDs, smartphone applications, rechargeable batteries, imaging systems, medical devices, and semiconductor fabrication and circuitry.
Berkowitz’s practice focuses on patent litigation in federal district courts and the International Trade Commission, as well as post-grant proceedings in the US Patent and Trademark Office. He has won arguments before both the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Mr. Berkowitz was named one of the “Top 40 under 40 Intellectual Property Lawyers” by the American Society of Legal Advocates and a New York Metro Rising Star by Super Lawyers.
