Global law firm Shearman & Sterling has expanded its global Intellectual Property & Technology Litigation practice with the addition of partners Mark Hannemann, Thomas Makin and Matthew Berkowitz from Kenyon & Kenyon LLP. They will join the firm as partners in New York.

“We are very pleased that this outstanding team of IP litigators is coming to Shearman & Sterling,” said Creighton Condon, the firm’s Senior Partner. “Mark, Tom and Matt have established practices and outstanding reputations in this critically important area of focus for our clients.”

Adam Hakki, Global Head of Shearman & Sterling’s Litigation practice, added, “The addition of Mark, Tom and Matt is an important further step in the continued growth of our Litigation practice. Their first-rate patent litigation expertise and focus on global corporate clients align exceptionally well with our clients’ needs and platform.”

“In addition,” said Richard Hsu, who leads Shearman & Sterling’s global Intellectual Property & Technology Transactions Group, “this exceptional litigation team, in combination with our transactions-based IP team, will enable us to address all of our clients’ IP-related needs.”

Hannemann has considerable first-chair experience for both plaintiffs and defendants in jury trials, bench trials and International Trade Commission hearings, with frequent appearances in the Eastern District of Texas, the District of Delaware and other US district courts. He also has a well-established appellate practice.

Makin’s practice focuses on patent litigation in federal court and before the International Trade Commission. Makin regularly appears before the US Patent and Trademark Office and advises clients regarding both substantive patent law and patent valuation and licensing issues. He has worked across a wide range of technological fields, including vehicular safety and propulsion systems, LEDs, smartphone applications, rechargeable batteries, imaging systems, medical devices, and semiconductor fabrication and circuitry.

Berkowitz’s practice focuses on patent litigation in federal district courts and the International Trade Commission, as well as post-grant proceedings in the US Patent and Trademark Office. He has won arguments before both the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Mr. Berkowitz was named one of the “Top 40 under 40 Intellectual Property Lawyers” by the American Society of Legal Advocates and a New York Metro Rising Star by Super Lawyers.

“Shearman & Sterling has a global platform that perfectly complements our practice and is consistent with our work for both leading global companies and smaller, regional companies,” Hannemann said.

Added Makin, “We have all seen the globalization of patents and IP disputes, and we are very excited about the opportunity to provide additional support to Shearman & Sterling’s existing IP clients.”

“Technology and technology-related IP disputes are no longer limited to pockets of technology excellence in the US – our clients are almost always significant global companies,” Berkowitz added.
