BakerHostetler is proud to announce that Partner Benjamin Hsing has joined the firm, resident in the New York office, as a member of the Intellectual Property Group and Biotechnology, Chemical, and Pharmaceutical team. He is recognized as a leading patent litigator in New York in Chambers USA 2015 and comes to BakerHostetler from Kaye Scholer.
Hsing focuses his practice as a trial lawyer on the enforcement of patent rights in the life sciences industry before U.S. District Courts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. With a concentration in Paragraph IV, Hatch-Waxman Act, and Abbreviated New Drug Applications (ANDA) litigation on behalf of high-profile national and international pharmaceutical companies, Hsing is adept at defending exclusivity rights through litigation, arbitration, or mediation. In addition to his pharmaceutical experience, he has represented clients across a multitude of technologies, including chemicals, biotechnology, medical devices, and semiconductors.
As a former patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Hsing draws on his experience to guide his clients through both contested and ex parte patent office proceedings and due diligence investigations in relation to acquisitions and licensing matters. Complementing his litigation and appellate practice, Hsing provides his clients with counsel on infringement, validity, enforceability, and clearance opinions, including licensing and antitrust matters. Hsing has also prosecuted patent applications for companies in the pharmaceutical, chemical, polymer, and biotechnology industries domestically and abroad.

Hsing joins two other recent additions to the firm’s IP Group. Partner Shannon McCue joined BakerHostetler’s Cleveland office in October as a member of the Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer Science Prosecution team, and IP litigator Allen Sokal joined the firm’s D.C. office in September. The recent additions are part of continued growth of the IP group resulting from BakerHostetler’s 2014 combination with national intellectual property firm Woodcock Washburn. BakerHostetler added nearly 70 IP attorneys and three new offices to the firm’s national profile, expanding the group to more than 160 dedicated IP lawyers with over 100 lawyers and patent agents registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
As a recognized authority in intellectual property matters, Hsing serves as a frequent speaker and author on patent and litigation issues. He earned his J.D. from George Washington University Law School in 1991, with Highest Honors, and was a member of the Order of the Coif. Hsing also served on the Moot Court Board and The George Washington Law Review. He holds an M.S. and B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a B.A. from Columbia University. Hsing is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
