Cozen O’Connor is pleased to announce the continued expansion of its internationally recognized Subrogation & Recovery Department with the recent addition of five attorneys.
Lawyers who have joined the firm’s Subrogation & Recovery Department in 2013 include Virginia Markovich, member in the New York office; Juliette J. Song, an attorney based in New York; Philip J. Berens, an associate in Los Angeles; Richard J. Maleski, an associate in the Miami office; and Marie-Pier Nadeau, an associate in the Toronto office.
“Clients have been turning to Cozen O’Connor’s Subrogation & Recovery Department since the early 1970s, and our practice has grown to more than 100 attorneys who represent the largest insurers and reinsurers in the United States, Canada, England and other international venues,” said Elliott R. Feldman, co-chair of Cozen O’Connor’s Subrogation & Recovery Department and co-chair of the firm’s Litigation Section. “With the addition of Virginia, Juliette, Philip, Richard and Marie-Pier, our international practice has grown even deeper and stronger.”
In addition to representing clients in the insurance industry, Cozen O’Connor handles self-insured recovery claims for many Fortune 1000 companies. Virginia Markovich is experienced in managing and handling subrogation matters from investigation through trial, including coordinating experts, handling inspections, preparing discovery and participating in depositions and court conferences. She previously worked with Clausen Miller, and earned her law degree from New York Law School and her B.A. in politics from New York University.
Juliette J. Song joined the firm from Weg & Myers. She earned her J.D. from American University, Washington College of Law, where she worked with the Women and the Law Clinic and the Washington College of Law Innocence Project. Ms. Song was a Marshall-Brennan Fellow, a mentor for first-year law students and clerked with the Honorable Brian F. Holeman of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
Philip J. Berens joined the firm from Early, Maslach and O’Shea, where he gained significant litigation experience and handled many cases from inception through conclusion. He has conducted jury trials and completed an intensive trial advocacy program that was certified by the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. Mr. Berens earned his J.D. from Michigan State University College of Law.
Richard Maleski joined the firm in November from the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, where he was an assistant state attorney and responsible for the prosecution of felony criminal cases. While earning his J.D. from Washington & Lee University School of Law, Mr. Maleski clerked for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of California and was a legal intern for the Hon. Nora Barry Fischer of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
Marie-Pier Nadeau focuses on prosecuting large subrogated commercial claims across Canada, including Quebec, and has experience as an insurance litigation counsel. She previously worked with McCague Borlack, LLP, and Tremblay Bois Mignault Lemay, and she is fluent in both French and English. Ms. Nadeau earned her civil law degree from Laval University with distinction and her common law degree from Dalhousie University.
