Perkins Coie Adds Life Sciences Partner in Los Angeles

Perkins Coie is pleased to announce that James W. Hill, M.D., has joined the firm’s Los Angeles office as a partner in the Intellectual Property (IP) practice in the Life Sciences industry group. Prior to joining Perkins Coie, James was a partner with WilmerHale LLP.

James represents life science and medical device companies in patent litigation, prosecution, inter partes review, post-grant proceedings, licensing, M&A, portfolio management and IP counseling. He advises startups, corporations and major educational institutions on issues related to biomarkers, genetic engineering, bioinformatics, imaging, cardiovascular medicine and other technology areas. In patent infringement litigation, James has served as trial and appellate counsel in successful cases related to pharmaceuticals and biologics therapies, genetic testing, informatics technologies, surgical devices and medical imaging.

“James is well known among established and emerging technology companies in the Los Angeles area, which pairs well with Perkins Coie’s strengths in that sector,” said Ronald McIntire, Managing Partner of the firm’s Los Angeles office. “His practice is a great fit for our firm, nationally and in Southern California, where his background in medicine and research distinguishes him in a crowded field where technical knowledge is increasingly important.”

James is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. He has co-authored chapters in a neurosurgical textbook and has authored various articles in medical journals. He has also conducted research in hemoglobin biochemistry, ophthalmology, digital radiography, intraoperative MRI for neurosurgical applications, image fusion techniques for CT, MRI, and PET scanning, and arteriography and radiosurgery for malignant brain tumors.

James earned his J.D., cum laude, from Boston University School of Law. A licensed physician, James received his M.D., with honors, from the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine and received his medical residency training in internal medicine and diagnostic radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he was awarded a fellowship in neuroradiology. He received a Credential of Readiness (CORe) certificate in business analytics, financial accounting, and economics for managers from Harvard Business School.
