Leading Trial Attorney Rejoins Sedgwick

Sedgwick is pleased to announce that Edward Stumpp, previously senior counsel with the firm, has rejoined as a partner in its Los Angeles office within its Healthcare Group. Stumpp’s practice is primarily focused on the representation of healthcare providers and medical groups in a variety of litigation ranging from managed care liability and medical malpractice to service contracts, ERISA matters and Mental Health Parity Act claims. He also has extensive experience in handling various payer-provider disputes.

“Ed’s knowledge of our firm, coupled with the new experiences he brings to our clients, make his rejoining our team an equally strong business decision as it is personally rewarding to welcome back our colleague and friend,” said David Humiston, Co-Chair of the firm’s Healthcare Group. “Ed’s experience and strengths as a litigator have also increasingly aligned with our practice, which is another valuable asset to our firm and our clients.”

“We are delighted to welcome back Ed to the firm and look forward to having the benefit of his perspectives and experience as we continue to serve our healthcare clients,” said Michael Bernstein, Co-Chair of the firm’s Healthcare Group. “He is a well-regarded attorney not only within our firm but also in the legal community and we’re fortunate to again call him a colleague of Sedgwick.”

Prior to Sedgwick, Stumpp spent four years with Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck as a partner in its healthcare practice. During his tenure with Brownstein Hyatt, Stumpp successfully led numerous jury trials on behalf of clients in state and federal court as well as arbitrations, administrative proceedings and appellate proceedings. He has handled cases across a range of jurisdictions throughout the nation and is licensed to practice in California, Kentucky, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court.

“It is an exciting time to be a part of Sedgwick’s healthcare litigation team and, while I wouldn’t trade the experiences or relationships formed during the last four years, I am personally very pleased to rejoin the Sedgwick family,” Stumpp said. “The firm has an excellent reputation in this practice, and I look forward to the opportunity to partner with the firm to serve our clients healthcare litigation needs.”

Stumpp’s noteworthy experience includes the representation of numerous extended care and skilled nursing facilities in cases involving allegations of elder abuse. He has also successfully defended numerous medical groups in trial against claims of wrongful death and bad faith. In addition, he has handled numerous payer-provider disputes in court involving both contracted and non-participating providers including medical, surgical and behavioral health claims.

Stumpp’s practice is also uniquely informed by his military service as a captain in the United States Marine Corps. In this role, he worked as a criminal defense trial attorney within the Staff Judge Advocate’s Office. Additionally, he spent a year as the Aide de Camp to the Commanding General of MCAS El Toro in which he handled issues related to the local community including land and air use.

In addition to his work on behalf of clients, Stumpp dedicates much of his time to authoring articles for industry publications and presenting to a variety of audiences on current and timely topics in the healthcare law landscape. Most recently, he served as a moderator at the American Conference Institute’s Sixth Annual Advanced Forum in a discussion on Managed Care Disputes and Litigation. Stumpp is also involved in a number of professional organizations including the California Society for Healthcare Attorneys and the American Health Lawyers Association. He is also a member of the Kentucky State Bar and the California State Bar Association.

Stumpp earned his law degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law and his bachelor’s degree in English language and literature from Centre College in Lexington, Ky., where he was an undergraduate fellow and a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
