Orrick to Add Leading Fintech and Financial Regulatory Advisor in London

Orrick announced today that Jacqui Hatfield, a leading advisor on UK and European Fintech and payments regulation, will join the firm on September 4 as a partner in the Tech Companies Group in London. Jacqui will join from Reed Smith, where she served as head of the Non Contentious Regulatory Team within its Financial Industry Group. She will be the fifth partner to join Orrick’s London office in the past 18 months.

Jacqui’s addition follows the recent hiring of U.S. payments expert Barrie VanBrackle, formerly the co-chair of Manatt’s Global Payments and Consumer Financial Services practice groups. “With Jacqui and Barrie, we will have leading authorities on both sides of the Atlantic in fintech and payments, areas of critical importance to our clients across the high growth, venture capital, private equity and banking markets,” said Chris Grew, head of Orrick’s London Tech Companies team.

Jacqui will bring more than two decades of regulatory experience across the financial services sector, advising emerging fintech companies, including payment service providers, peer to peer lending platforms, app payment providers, robo advisers, as well as traditional institutions, including banks, fund managers, fund platforms, asset managers and brokers, both in the UK and across Europe and the United States. She advises clients on issues relating to authorization, structuring, outsourcing, conduct of business, market abuse, money laundering, payment services and consumer credit.

“We are excited to continue the growth of our London office with leading talent in the tech, energy & infrastructure and finance sectors” said Douglas Lahnborg, Leader of Orrick’s London office. Earlier this year, the firm announced the addition of Ylan Steiner from King Wood Mallesons to its London Tech Companies team, which ranks #1 for European venture investing volume for the past five quarters, according to Pitchbook.

“Orrick’s leadership in the European and global venture growth market, and its growing European private equity platform, were key draws for me. It’s an ideal platform from which to serve the fintech market,” said Jacqui.

Jacqui will be joined by Reed Smith associate Daniel Weiner, who will be based in Orrick’s Washington, D.C., office. Prior to Reed Smith, Dan was with Freshfields for five years.
