Morgan Lewis Adds Corporate and Latin America Transactional Partners in Houston, Bolstering Energy, Life Sciences, and Investment Funds Practices

Morgan Lewis today welcomes veteran transactional lawyer Juan-Pablo “John” Crespo to the firm as a partner in Houston. His long-time colleague, Adrian Talamantes, will join the firm on May 30, also in Houston. Both new partners have deep backgrounds in corporate transactions, focusing on energy, life sciences, and investment funds transactions throughout the United States and Latin America. They join Morgan Lewis from the global transactions group of another global law firm.

Mr. Crespo focuses his practice on cross-border transactions both within and outside the United States, including the formation and structuring of joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, privatizations, development of infrastructure projects, and general corporate and contract matters. He is a native of Bolivia who is fluent in Spanish and English, and his extensive cross-border transactional representations have primarily involved Latin America.

Mr. Talamantes, who is a native of Mexico and fluent in Spanish and English, handles a wide variety of domestic and international business transactions and industries, including project development, joint ventures, acquisitions, and divestitures in the oil, gas, and electricity industries. His experience also includes financing transactions and commercial arrangements in the energy industry.

“The addition of John and Adrian to our firm further establishes Morgan Lewis as a primary source of legal services for clients seeking to efficiently move their global transactions forward, particularly in Latin America,” said Firm Chair Jami McKeon. “Our clients will benefit from their intimate knowledge of the inner workings of cross-border matters, especially those involving the energy, life sciences, and investment funds industries.”

Mr. Crespo’s work includes advising a wide array of clients, including public and private corporations, private equity funds, sovereign wealth funds, and financial institutions. He drafts and negotiates joint venture agreements, domestic and cross-border acquisition agreements, shareholder agreements, and project-related agreements. Mr. Talamantes advises domestic and international companies, project developers, investors, and buyers and sellers of equity and assets. The pair join a Morgan Lewis team that Law360 last year named its Energy Practice Group of the Year.

“We have made service to our energy transactions clients a core focus, and the addition of John and Adrian complements our existing team and our wide-ranging work with clients in the United States and Latin America,” said Morgan Lewis partner Charles Engros, leader of the Corporate & Business Transactions practice. “Morgan Lewis has strong and recognized Latin America and global energy practices served across many of our offices, and having John and Adrian with us, combined with their versatility and extensive familiarity with transactions of all types, will serve our clients well.”

From offices in Houston, Miami, New York, Washington, DC, and Los Angeles, Morgan Lewis’s Latin America team includes lawyers across multiple practice areas—including mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance, project development, and financial restructuring—who are known market leaders and understand the nuances of Latin American business practices, laws, and cultures. The team includes lawyers who are licensed to practice in Latin American jurisdictions and who are fluent in Spanish and Portuguese. These lawyers also have long-standing collaborative relationships with local legal counsel and key business partners throughout Latin America.

The energy transactions team at Morgan Lewis provides practical and informed advice on some of the world’s most complex and significant energy transactions. With more than 100 energy lawyers operating in key energy and financial centers around the world, the team advises on project development and finance; mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures; capital markets transactions; and regulatory and compliance issues across the energy spectrum—from oil and gas to liquefied natural gas, petrochemicals and refining, and conventional and renewable electric power.
