BakerHostetler’s Energy Team Adds Energy Transactional Attorney

BakerHostetler today announced that Mark L. Jones has joined the firm’s Houston office as a partner in the Business and Corporate Group and on the Energy team. Jones joins a cross-functional 80-member team of attorneys who counsel international and domestic energy companies and service providers in oil, natural gas, shale, and alternative energy. The team is skilled at managing all the legal needs of an energy company, including mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, litigation, intellectual property, labor and employment, data privacy and protection, tax, and bankruptcy and restructuring matters. He comes to the firm, with his team intact, from Burleson LLP, and brings more than 30 years of experience handling high-level transactions critical to global energy companies.

Jones focuses his practice primarily in the energy industry, directing downstream, midstream, and upstream public and private oil and gas companies worldwide through mergers, acquisitions, and dispositions, and other financial capital-raising transactions. He draws on his experience as a former in-house general counsel and having served numerous clients as their outside general counsel. In addition, Jones has broad experience representing companies and underwriters in securities offerings and corporate finance transactions. He has led more than 100 public and private offerings, including initial and secondary public offerings.

BakerHostetler’s Energy team was recently recognized by Law360 as one of the nation’s best practices when it was selected as a Practice Group of the Year for 2015. Over the past three years, key additions have continued to strengthen the firm’s Energy team. The Denver office added L. Poe Leggette, Co-Leader of the firm’s Energy practice, and his team, as well as geologist and Marcellus and Utica shales authority Michael Joy. Energy and transactional partner Laura McMahon and international energy litigator Sashe Dimitroff joined the Houston office. Jones’ team, Associates Allison Jones and Jason Smith, also joined the Houston office.

“Our Energy team has added 17 new team members since 2014 due to the trends we’re monitoring in the sector,” said Leggette. “Mark’s addition to our team is part of an overall strategic initiative the firm is undertaking to continue to meet the changing needs of our clients in the industry. His cutting-edge energy transactional skills will bolster the team’s business offerings.”

“Mark’s range of experience handling transactions in the energy sector is a welcome complement to the Houston office,” said Lisa H. Pennington, Managing Partner of the Houston office. “I know our clients throughout the firm will find his background invaluable as their businesses necessitate these highly specialized skills.”

“BakerHostetler’s Energy team has made a name for itself as a go-to resource in the energy industry for the depth and scope of its practice,” said Jones. “I’m thrilled my clients from around the world will be able to take advantage of the firm’s additional resources through its 13 other offices.”

Jones received his J.D. from The University of Texas School of Law in 1985, and earned his B.B.A. from The University of Texas in 1982.
