We all know that first impressions matter, so when dealing with something as important as a job interview, it is crucial not to take any chances. If you are uncertain about any piece of clothing, accessory, or hairstyle, it is best to avoid it. You want to feel as confident and comfortable as possible during an interview (staying within the confines of business professional attire, that is).
Probably the most important piece of advice is to look neat, clean, and well-put together. A messy appearance may or may not be indicative of carelessness in work, but most employers would rather not take the chance to find out. Stop by a mirror before your interview to make any last minute adjustments – you never know what the wind did to your coif or what that spinach salad did to your smile. Even if your potential employer boasts a business casual dress code, it is always advisable to overdress rather than underdress. Equally important, especially in a law firm environment, is to lean toward the side of conservatism. Men should always wear a well-fitting suit in a classic navy, gray, or black, along with an understated tie selected for its class rather than personality. Your shirt should be clean and pressed, and your shoes should be shined. Perhaps this goes without saying, but remember to put on dress socks instead of your ankle high Nikes. Be sure your hair is not in your eyes, and you are clean shaven or with carefully trimmed facial hair. For a law firm interview, women should wear a business suit in black, gray, or navy. Whatever shirt or blouse you wear underneath should be carefully chosen and workplace-appropriate. If you’re wearing a skirt, be sure it is an acceptable length (knee length or below), and that you have on neutral hose. Your shoes should be closed-toe and have only a small heel. Save those strappy four-inchers for your next date instead! Women should also avoid a heavy hand with their makeup – try to keep it as natural as possible while still covering your “flaws”. Go easy on your accessories as well; they should be kept down to a minimum (probably no more than two pieces). Both men and women should also avoid dosing themselves in perfume, cologne, or aftershave. Deodorant is sufficient, and your scent might even irritate an interviewer. Above all, maintain a neat, simple, and professional appearance when interviewing. You want your interviewer to remember your stellar qualifications, not your questionable fashion sense. Tempting as it may be, resist the urge to let a little of your personality shine through. A law firm interview is not the time to make a fashion statement – save that for your first firm-wide happy hour after you get the job. |
