Brian M. Rothery has joined Stroock & Stroock & Lavan's Intellectual Property Practice Group as partner. Rothery was formerly a partner at Jones Day; prior to Jones Day he was a partner with Pennie & Edmonds. His practice handles litigation for federal patent and trademark claims, as well as state unfair competition and business tort claims. Stroock handles all aspects of intellectual property law and provides guidance to a variety of clients in the U.S. and overseas.

Latham & Watkins is one of several LA firms with strong 2006 numbers. The firm's revenues rose by 15 per cent from $1.412 billion to $1.624 billion. Partner profits also increased by 16 per cent. Last year was also one of expansion for Latham, as the firm opened offices in Madrid and Barcelona and also added two partners to its German branch. LA firms Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker and Gibson Dunn & Crutcher also reported good years.

Bankruptcy lawyers prepare for an increase in business around the end of the year. Though business bankruptcy filings are down by 45 percent and corporate debt default rates remain near all-time lows, a faith in business cycles has caused predictions of an eventual downturn. In preparation, some large firms are recruiting big-name attorneys from other firms. Winston & Strawn recruited four; Kirkland & Ellis acquired a lawyer from rival Weil, Gotshal & Manges in New York; and top NY-firm Paul, Hastings Janofsky & Walker opened its Chicago office with two attorneys from Jones Day.

As of late yesterday (Feb. 13) Cozen O'Connor and Wolf Block have ended merger talks. The firms began discussion of a possible merger about three months ago, but decided that business and structural differences were too difficult to overcome. They both reported feeling great respect for each other still, despite the fact that they weren't able to join forces. Had the firms combined, they would have had over 370 attorneys in Pennsylvania, more than any other firm in the state.

Soon after the announcement of the opening its new London office, Heller Ehrman recruited three corporate lawyers from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr. Richard Eaton, Christopher Grew and Struan Penwarden will join the three Heller Ehrman partners already chosen to open the new office. The three Wilmer Cutler attorneys' practices deal with emerging companies and corporate technology. The firm will be recruiting associates and aims to have 25 lawyers in London by the end of '07. Already present in Beijing, Hong Kong, and Singapore, this office will be the firm's fourth outside the U.S.

There has been a lot of activity recently in Southeast U.S. McKenna Long & Aldridge raised its first-year associate salary to $130,000 in Atlanta, where it has 55 attorneys. Kilpatrick Stockton gained a partner from PricewaterhouseCoopers in New York who will out of the firm's Atlanta and New York offices. Three attorneys have also left Greenburg Traurig for Carlton Field's intellectual property practice; they joined the firm as of counsel.
