Morgan Lewis Continues Tax Practice Expansion, Adds Broad-based Team in Chicago, Silicon Valley

Morgan Lewis today continued expanding its market-leading tax practice, welcoming a broad-based three-partner tax team—Joshua Richardson, Adam Beckerink, and Michael Liu—that will assist US and global clients operating in the aftermath of historic changes in US tax laws and brings significant experience in multistate and local tax planning.

At Morgan Lewis all three partners reunite with the tax leader of their former firm, Tom Linguanti, who joined Morgan Lewis last year in Chicago, along with partner Jenny Austin.

Members of the new team advise clients on US and international tax planning and tax disputes, as well as state and local tax (SALT) planning and disputes. All three also will be resident in the firm’s Chicago office, and Mr. Liu will practice in Morgan Lewis’s Silicon Valley office as well.

“As the US tax system has undergone its biggest change in decades, and state and local governments become more aggressive in seeking tax revenue, our clients will benefit from the addition of Josh, Adam, and Mike to our already leading tax team,” said Firm Chair Jami McKeon. “Our three new colleagues have served a wide variety of clients on the entire range of tax questions, further establishing Morgan Lewis as a global center of comprehensive tax advice.”

Mr. Richardson focuses much of his practice on advising multinational companies in international and domestic tax planning, particularly post-acquisition integration planning and implementation. He represents clients in matters involving foreign currency taxation and hedging of foreign currency risks. In addition, he counsels companies on the foreign tax credit and Subpart F planning and represents clients in their administrative tax disputes.

Mr. Beckerink advises clients on SALT disputes and planning. He represents multinational corporations on a full range of SALT planning and transactional issues, controversies, and litigation. He also represents clients in matters including state False Claims Act tax defense, state tax refund class action defense, individual residency, telecommunications excise taxes, and sales and income taxes.

Mr. Liu focuses on international tax planning issues, working with clients across industries including biotechnology and life sciences, technology, semiconductor, software, and automotive. He advises multinational companies on cross-border transactions, including inversions and redomestications of private and publicly traded companies, as well as tax-efficient cash repatriation strategies and loss-utilization planning. He counsels clients on post-acquisition integration planning and implementation and transfer pricing planning and implementation.

All three lawyers are also considered thought leaders in taxation, frequently writing and speaking on a wide range of tax issues to audiences both within and outside the United States.

“Josh, Adam, and Mike assist us in continuing to expand the suite of services, as well as geographical reach, we provide to our clients during this evolving era of tax policy, one that presents both immense challenges and considerable opportunities to the companies we represent,” said Bart Bassett, who leads Morgan Lewis’s tax practice. “They strengthen our ability to advise clients in virtually every industry in maximizing the benefits of the tax laws, from planning to dispute resolution.”

The top-ranked global tax practice at Morgan Lewis represents clients in all stages of tax-related issues: planning, transactional-related tax work, and tax controversy and litigation matters. It includes lawyers with high-level service in the US Department of the Treasury and the US Department of Justice and advises on international as well as US federal, state, and local tax exposures associated with pending transactions and ongoing business operations.

The firm’s Chicago office is a gateway to the US Midwest, providing regional and global clients with advice on a broad range of service areas including litigation, labor, employment, intellectual property, securities enforcement, investment management, and corporate transactions. The Silicon Valley office delivers sophisticated and pragmatic advice to meet all of the legal needs of technology companies and their investment partners in Silicon Valley, across Asia, and throughout the world.
