Eversheds Sutherland (US) LLP is pleased to announce that Shawn Rafferty has joined the Private Capital team within its Corporate Practice Group as a partner in the Atlanta office, bolstering its national and cross-border aviation, transportation and equipment finance services to clients. Prior to joining Eversheds Sutherland, Mr. Rafferty served as a partner at Barnes & Thornburg LLP.

“Our clients will immediately benefit from the depth and breadth that Shawn’s practice brings,” said Eversheds Sutherland Co-CEO Mark D. Wasserman. “A highly respected finance lawyer who has advised market leaders across the full spectrum of aviation and transportation matters, he is the perfect complement to our existing team and will bring enormous value to our clients. His background and extensive transactional and dispute resolution experience adds significantly to our national and global capabilities.”

With more than 20 years of experience, Mr. Rafferty works with domestic and international clients on all aspects of their equipment financing needs, including acquisitions and dispositions, restructuring, mortgage-financed transactions, pooled aircraft asset securitizations, sale and leaseback arrangements, and operating leases. From the beginning of his practice, he has been deeply involved in aviation, representing airlines, investors, lenders and other parties involved in commercial and general aviation.

In addition to his representation of aviation clients, Mr. Rafferty regularly represents clients in many other industries, including transportation and logistics, banking and finance, energy, and telecommunications. His more than two decades of experience in these fields gives him a keen advantage in negotiating transactions on behalf of his clients, including major airlines, multinational corporations, financial institutions, investors, manufacturers and suppliers.

“Shawn’s arrival marks a significant advancement in strengthening the capacity of our global aviation and transportation platform,” said Eversheds Sutherland US Partner and Private Capital Co-Lead Peter A. Fozzard. “With the recent addition of aviation finance colleague Katy Smyth in our Ireland office, we remain committed to continually enhancing and expanding our capabilities in order to better serve our clients around the world. Shawn is very well-known in the aviation industry, and we are extremely pleased to have him on board. We look forward to Shawn taking on a lead role in continuing to expand our aviation and transportation client offerings.”

Mr. Rafferty’s practice spans a broad range of general finance issues and operational matters involving the aviation, rail, shipping, energy and logistics sectors, including corporate restructurings, project development, securities offerings, and mergers and acquisitions. He also regularly assists clients in disputes arising out of aviation, transportation and equipment finance transactions, including litigation and arbitration. Additionally, Mr. Rafferty assists clients in restructuring work, advising clients both in and out of bankruptcy.
